Hugh Banton "The Planets" now available as digital download
You can purchase the new Hugh
Banton album, an organ rendition of Gustav
Holst's The Planets, as a digital download through
the following link http://www.hbmusic.organworkshop.co.uk/planets.htm.
The album comes as a zip 88Mb file including 7 tracks, and from
the same page it is possibile to download the artwork as well.
Banton explains: "Holst’s orchestral suite ’The
Planets’ was premiered in 1918. The composer had originally
conceived it as a piano duet, adding the familiar orchestration
shortly after. This unique organ performance is a based
of the original keyboard score - which is in itself surprisingly
close to the final version - with multi-tracked organ and percussion
additions".

VdGG: the first single on CD at last!
The English label Polydor has just released
a 3 CD box compilation, Spirit
of Joy: Tales from the Polydor Underground 1967-1974,
including also the two tracks that were
part of the first 1968 VdGG single, Firebrand
and People You Were Going To.
Besides VdGG, many other bands are featured on the 50 tracks:
Jethro Tull, Soft Machine, Caravan, Rare Bird, The Who...

VdGG: Man Erg
at the hippie Festival
The double live compilation of the 2007
Burg Herzberg German
hippie Festival is now officially out. VdGG are featured on the
second CD with a heartfelt version of Man Erg,
which clocks at 12 minutes long. This is the first official live
recording of the trio line up. The track was mixed by Hugh Banton.
Besides VdGG, the compilation, titled Live at
Hoi Hunstadt - 36287 Breitenbach, also features some other
important 70s bands: Pavlov's Dog,
Colosseum,
Kraan and Manfred
Mann's Earth Band.
The double CD compilation is available on line through the Festival
website.

The peterhammill.com website is up!
At long last, the companion website to Sofasound
is now up. www.peterhammill.com
is a mainly a powerful tool that enables a deep investigation
of the Hammill lyrics. All the lyrics from both PH and VdGG album
are available and connected with each other by a series of tags
and cross references:
"What is this site? At one level, it's like a maze, there
are many different paths you can take. However, it's not a maze
because there is no 'right path' and there is no center or even
an exit. It's an encyclopedia with live cross references. It's
a book that's changing all the time and being written by everyone.
It's a small universe in its own right, a mini-web.
Where do I start? Well, let's try searching for a word.
Type the word 'drive' into the box on top right of the screen
and hit the search button. Well, that's quite simple, we get a
list of all the entries that include the word. But, the entries
contain the word 'drive' in various contexts. What, if we wanted
to find songs about driving? Well, click on the link for 'Auto'
in the result list. We know that's about driving, right? Now,
have a look at the song. Underneath the title are tags which refer
to the subjects covered in the song. If you click on the word
'Driving', you get a list of all the other songs which have this
as a subject. Some of the songs have all sorts of tags. Look at
the entry for 'Driven'. Now, you can click on travelling and this
brings us to another set of songs where travel is a theme or a
reference to it. So, congratulations, your journey has begun".
Besides that, a lot of free PH/VdGG audio
tracks are available in full streaming mode, as well as videoclips
and pictures. The website does also features various community
tools such as forums, blogs, mailing lists and so on.

WARNING: illegal Umbertide DVD now available
We had notice of the existence of an illegal
DVD press of the VdGG 2007 Umbertide concert. That seems to be
in the same vein of the previous unauthorized and illegal VdGG
DVD of both RFH and Shepherds Bush Empire 2005 concerts.
The Study Group and the TV Program INDIE, who did the video shooting,
strongly recommend not to buy this product, as it is clearly illegal
and released without the band's permission. The dvd montage, the
cover artwork and the pictures used in the artwork were intended
as a gift to the fans for free distribution, so using them as
a part of a commercial release is absolutely NOT AUTHORIZED AND
ILLEGAL

VdGG in Rosignano:
confusion and success
Despite some problems in the coordination
of the venue and tickets sales, the March 29th VdGG show at Teatro
Solvay in Rosignano (LI) was a huge success. About 700 people
full packed the theatre hall and followed the show with great
passion and excitement, clapping and shouting during the songs.
The setlist was formed mainly by new songs, though the band delighted
the audience with beautiful versions of old classics like Man
Erg and Childlike Faith. Here is the complete list:
Meurglys III
Interference Patterns
Every Bloody Emperor
Lifetime
All That Before
Over the Hill
We Are Not Here

and will be out in March 17th on Emi/Virgin. A K

Dorie Jackson: David's daughter finally
releases her debut album
After realizing acting was not her calling, Dorie Jackson decided
to follow in her fathers footsteps and try a career in music.
Dorie started her professional singing career as a backup vocalist
for folk artist Francis Dunnery. During the last six years, Dorie
and Francis have been writing together. They finally sat down
and started recording, three years ago and their years of effort
have resulted in Dorie's debut solo album, The
Courting Ground. Obviously the album has
plenty of Dave's playing on it...

Nic Potter in Guastalla June 10th: full line up announced
This is the complete line up for the much awaited
Nic Potter gig in Guastalla (Italy) planned for next June: Nic
will be joined on stage by David
Jackson (VDGG - saxes and flute), Tony
Pagliuca (ex Le Orme - organ and keyboards), Gigi
Cavalli Cocchi (drums) and Franco
Giaffreda (guitars). Franco is a very talented
italian player and a guitar maestro who shared the stage with
David Jackson in Lecco 2005. Also the presence of guest singers
like Francesca Arrigoni
(La Betoniera) and Marco Olivotto
is very likely at least for a part of the show. Studio sessions
in Italy are also booked for the first days of April, as Nic will
start recording his new album at Labour of Love studios in Rovereto.
Nic Potter in Guastalla June 10th and 11th 2006
The Study Group 2006 event begins to take shape:
the much awaited Nic Potter
gig will take place in the main square of Guastalla (Italy) on
June 10th. The show will be part of the prestigious Mantova Jazz
Festival 2006 (though you can be sure that it will not be a properly
jazz concert...). At the moment confirmed to be part of the "Nic
Potter band" are VDGG sax and flute player David
Jackson, ex Le Orme keyboard player Tony
Pagliuca and drummer Gigi
Cavalli Cocchi, who recently played in Guastalla
with Judge Smith. The name of the guitar player will be announced
shortly. The show will be introduced by a press conference on
June 9th, while the usual meeting with the Students will take
place in the morning after the concert (June 11th).
The Study Group goes podcasting!
Please go to www.phvdggstudygroup.it/podcast
to listen to the first two podcast episodes by the Peter Hammill
& VDGG Study Group. Though most suitable for italian people,
due to the use of Italian language, the podcast should be worthwile
listening to also for foreign Students. At the moment is possibile
to listen to the translation of Peter Hammill lyrics declaimed
by actor Massimo Onesti
(who shared the stage with David Jackson and Peter Hammill) and
to a selection of rare live recordings by Van
der Graaf Generator and Peter
Hammill. This is the first attempt ever to do
a thematic musical and cultural podcasting activitiy related to
Peter Hammill and Van der Graaf Generator.
Nic Potter in Guastalla in June 2006
Ex VDGG and K Group bass player Nic
Potter will be the very special guest of this
year's Study Group meeting in Guastalla (Italy). Besides meeting
with the Students, Nic will play live with a full band (expect
some VDGG members to be involved) to shocase his new studio album.
Recording sessions for the album will start in London in January.
More will follow.
Judge Smith and John Ellis in Guastalla
Guastalla – Ostello del Po, 9 October 2005
Q & A Session + lunch
Sunday October 9th we'll have the honor to meet
a couple of friends and have a chat with them. In fact Judge Smth
& John Ellis will be with us at the famous Ostello del Po
for a Study Group Session, and they will join us for lunch as
well. Questions, answers, facts and stories: it's the right time
to interact with them and discover new details.
It has to be pointed out that this is not the annual Study Group
session (wich took place last spring) but a new possibility that
the Study Group offers for free to all the Students. So we reccommend
to come to Guastalla, because it's a unique occasion. The Ostello
has improved his capacity up to 50 people (4-6 people rooms) but
the cheap price remained the same.
As usual a luch will be arranged on Sunday, so we invite you to
confirm your presence mailing to boscoprofondo@tin.it. It all
came to life so fast and the event is only a couple of weeks away,
but still it's an opportunity worth to catch.
